I was in the Navy with Ira Stoker and was his best man in his wedding. When we were in the Bos’n Locker” together, awaiting service school in Great Lakes. I ended up on the USS Marias out of Norfolk, VA. I had thought he was from Gleason, TN, but now that he mentions it, I remember McKenzie. “Stoker” was my best friend and I’m grateful that I found this webpage. I am from New York, and Stoker had a hard time grasping the fact that we had cows and barn dances and Hillbillies where I came from, “The Finger Lakes”. Thank-you. Bob Leonard

Bill Childress MM2...Sat, April 24, 2010

I came aboard Vesuvius on 13 NOV 64 as an MMFN straight from boot camp and MM "A" school at Great Lakes. I left on 6 SEP 65 after becoming ill. I remember many of the engineering department guys from that period, Rick Laplante, Ira Stoker, Pappy Dolan and Senior Chief William Miller. Senior Chief Miller served together again on USS Kennebed (AO-36).

The officers and crew who sailed on the Vesuvius were doing a dangerous job, my thanks to all for their service.

I was on the Vesuvius from July 66 til Mar 70, lots of memories. A friend of mine said in a poem she wrote about me recently, that I have lots of stories that i love to tell. And many of those stories are about many of you fellow Vesuvius sailors. I have looked at this site and the AE Sailor site, and there are a lot of names I know, but there are a lot that I remember that are not there too.
I was wondering what happened to some of my fellow SKs. SK1 Shoemake, SK1 Fraker, Hovey, Covey, Abney, DeKam, Golden, Fooster. And some of the other Supply people Tucker and O'Connor, Geiger, Busby, Lindsey, and so many more. This is a great site that brings back some great memories, and some others too.    <da.grimes@yahoo.com>

Sometime near the end of 1967 close to 1970 a shipmate was killed when he fell into a hold and went all of the way down to the bottom of the ship.
I'm looking for anyone who may have heard of or witnessed this incident. Please sign the guest book and I will get back to you. Thanks

My Dad, Frederick J Rohl served aboard the USS Vesuvius during WWII. He passed away three years ago. Spoke proudly and often of his life in the Navy. Also made it quite clear he experienced the most frightening time of his life on the V! When the seas were rough the crew had to find anything soft to cushion the bombs so they wouldn't bang into eachother! I have some photos of amo being passed from one ship to another. God Bless my Dad and the brave sailors he served with.

Dunlap J.  MR3: Probably kept silence too long. Miss and remember you all. God keep us all together...Remember the Mighty V Amen.

Steven (Spanky) Temple: Fellow Brothers in Arms,
I served on the Rainier AE-5 from 67-70 as an SM3 and remember the unreps with your ship. We always looked forward to getting fresh supplies and of course your movies. All Rainier sailors appreciate what you did to keep the gun line going in Vietnam. You are all remembered by our crew.
I published a book on the Rainier's tour of Vietnam duty in 2005. With the exception of cargo, I believe we were very similar in experiences. The book can be found on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble's web site. The profits go to the Freedom Alliance Childrens Fund for children of KIA in Iraq. I've stayed at Motel 6 and Super 8 but how many people can say they've been guests at the AE-15? She was born 1/16/45. Named Vesuvius and weighed 5,504 tons. She passed away at age 28 on 8/14/73. During her short 28 year life she served in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. It never cost a cent to stay in her and you got free meals. Now how many other lodgings can claim that? She was the cheapest cruise ship I ever sailed and she visited some pretty neat ports too.

Each man who passed through her life has memories of her. Good or bad, they are memories just the same and they should be shared with children, grandchildren or anyone else who wants to know what the hardest working sailors in the Navy were all about.

Maybe you feel you can't write or express yourself, perhaps you think they are not interesting, but if you can remember them...we would love to hear them.
Write me...Call me...email me. Share what you have.

My father, Harry "Red" Pierce, served on the Vesuvius from 44-46 as a BM2. He passed on 6/21/2000. One story Dad told of his time on the Vesuvius was how amazingly dark it was at night on the sea. He would tell me the stars were so beautiful in that totally black sky. I can only imagine. My mother passed on just three weeks ago, 1/28/06. I noticed there was a reunion in Charleston, SC - where we live - in 2004. So sorry we missed that. I would love to have taken Mom. Thank you for this site to browse and remember my father. And especially thank you to you all who served on the Vesuvius and for freedom for our great country. God's Blessings. Joan

I served about the Mighty "V" from Dec 1960 to Aug 1964. Started out as a deck ape in 2nd Div then became asst Postal Clerk and final got designated PCSN and became the ships postal clerk. I got out and was in the reserves then came back on active duty but had to convert to a critical rate so became a Radioman and retired as an RMC in 1986. I learned more being a sailor while I was in 2nd under BM2 "Gus Gus" Clarkson and BM1 Dame than the rest of my time in the Navy. Had really good times. Especially at the Bank Club in Port Chi.

Wow... My grandpa, Frank Jones, was on the USS Vesuvius in WWII. He saw a picture of Captain George and immediately remembered him. Then he told us how after the war was over and they were on their way back to Texas, Captain George told them to be careful, they had made it that far and he didn't want the bombs to blow up at that point (I don't remember it word for word unfortunately though).... It's really interesting how my Grandpa has a lot of history and stuff like that, and he remembers it as if it were yesterday.

This is a really cool site!! :)

I came aboard the Vesuvius somewhere in the South China Sea in 1970, landing on the fantail, hoisted down from a Navy helo. I was a 20-something FTG3 and spent the next three years driving a forklift. I left her in May of '73, after she was scheduled for decommissioning. There are some familiar names on this site, Johnny Hollenbeck, Terrell, Leguaux, and Stringfellow. I hope the years have been good to you guys and all the others I served with. Remember riding out that typhoon in Hong Kong?

Dear Shipmate,
do you have a list of all COs of the USS. VESUVIUS (AE-15) with their complete names and exact dates they served aboard? Usually such a list is printed in the decommissioning-booklet (pamphlet) of each U. S. Navy ship. I even like parts of this list, for example biographies from Captains from Cruise-books or change-of-command-pamphlets.
I would appreciate it very much if you can please e-mail me this list or just a scan of this list or a scan of the bios.
Thank you very much for your kind support.
Sincerely, Wolfgang

Hi guys. I was a Radarman aboard AE-15 during 1952 to 1954. We operated out of Sasebo, Japan. I still have fond memories. I remember the harbor in Sasebo when we would be anchored far in the back and away from all of the other ships and how long a ride it would be on the launch when we went on liberty. I would like to get in touch with any shipmates that served with me during that time. When I left the Vesuvius in mid-1954, I finished my tour of duty on the USS Etlah, A net tender that maintained the submarine net at the entrance of Toyko bay.
